Ricky Bearghost is a soaring spirit who we first met a few years back when our friend Daniel became the director of
Portland Art & Learning Studios in Portland, Oregon.
Daniel called us one day and said, “there is an artist here who I know you guys will love him and his work.”
Daniel has visited Webb Gallery, got the vibe and we felt confident that he understood our sensibilities.
Sure enough, on our first facetime call with Ricky it was all laughter and smiles for us and Ricky! We have since worked to keep up with Ricky and show his artwork.

Ricky was born on March 6, 1964 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He is an active member of the Three Affiliated Tribes- the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation who believe that their presence in North America is from the beginning of time.

Ricky learned how to weave using a lap loom. He has really taken to the artform and loves color and incorporating unconventional materials. Much of his weaving materials are like a journal from his day. He is known to use plant matter, plastic, organic matter and other found elements. Hiis weavings are journals of his day. He hand crafts ceramic beads, loves electric plastic beads, buttons, green plastic bag produce bags, buttons, and found jewelry and surprising elements.

During the covid shut down year, Ricky lost his art studio, but the next chapter is great with a few folks from the Art studio started their own virtual center called the Elbow Room as a set up a way to assist artists, including our favorite Ricky.

Ricky’s work has matured to a super sophisticated level and are great examples of vision in design. We see his confidence in his work and himself which is such a ray of sunshine.

We have often wondered if his incredible weavings which are reminiscent of breastplates come from items he has seen or from a collective consciousness.
Whatever they are, they are beautiful creations which make Ricky laugh with joy and pride. We are thrilled to continue to show Ricky’s work. We truly believe in his greatness!
