At 7:30 PM on Thursday, September 28th, join us for an introductory Flamenco workshop in the Salloum Studio at the RCA. This beginner-friendly class will walk you through the various elements of flamenco, teaching you fundamental steps and concepts, including hand and arm movements, hand clapping, marking steps, footwork, and the enthusiastic flamenco shouts of encouragement (Olé!). Introduction to Flamenco

In this easy to follow class you will be introduced to the various elements of flamenco and will learn some basic steps and concepts such as hand and arm movement, hand clapping, marking steps, footwork and flamenco shouts of encouragement (Olé!). Come learn about flamenco music and dance so you can better appreciate it next time you watch it live or online.

About Jhoely Triana

Jhoely Triana, born in Colombia, is a Vancouver based flamenco dancer and choreographer. Jhoely trained at the Goh Ballet Academy, completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Contemporary Dance at Simon Fraser University, and studied at Al Mozaico Flamenco and Rosario Flamenco. She has presented work at the Victoria Flamenco Festival, Vancouver International Flamenco Festival, the Dance Centre, Vines Festival, New Works Summer Series, BC Culture Days, Evergreen Cultural Centre and Presentation House’s Ann MacDonald Studio. Jhoely has also travelled to Spain, Poland and the USA for professional development intensives. Jhoely's work emphasizes connection to the audience through authenticity of emotion and vulnerability.

Flamenco in the Park: Arboles with Jhoely Triana

Arboles (Trees) is an outdoor, site-responsive work featuring flamenco dance and music in a contemporary urban setting to express current themes such as changing times, perseverance and finding hope. The work uses the metaphor of trees to represent how we must honor our roots and gather strength from our past to reach new heights so that we can share our lived experiences with our community and spread the seeds of empathy and compassion.

Catch the lunch and after-work foot traffic and be swept away by Jhoely Triana's stunning performance, accompanied by Peter Mole on guitar (Toque) and Maria Avila the singer (Cante).
