I was fascinated to learn the science behind the idea that not getting enough sleep can be a factor in making the body store fat - I had thought that this was just some pop culture idea put in women's magazines to assuage the guilt of those who couldn't be bothered to diet properly!
I would recommend this book to friends and family (their health is important to me - I don't want to live a long, healthy life and have them all die off before me) and to any stressed, rushing woman out there who can make herself stop long enough to actually read the book.
I appreciate the authors writing and that she makes things understandable and engaging.
My background is nursing but I believe I learned - and will remember - more from this book about the interconnectedness of lifestyle and body systems than I ever have from classes and textbooks.
Dr. Libby's style is entertaining as well as educational. She has her pulse on what it's like to be a woman trying to balance life's activities while - and yes, we all do it! - trying to please everyone and "keep the peace" from day to day.
You'll love this book and want to mark the spots that speak to you most specifically.
I hasten to say it just might change the way you rush through your day !!
Where I feel the book lets the reader down is in it's patronising and moralising tone - that it's your fault you're a "rushing woman" and if only you would make mental and physical space to "relax" and "change your perspective" then you'd feel a lot better. This is simply victim-blaming.
We live in a world where the odds are stacked against women - the "to-do" list is not something you invented yourself, it's there because there is a social and economic demand to work full-time while raising two (no more, no fewer) children, paying the mortgage and somehow making time for Pilates and yoga (but don't bulk up too much and don't be either too thin or too fat). In this respect I found the book perpetuating unrealistic expectations of women.
What did I hope for instead? Maybe some acknowledgement of the structural nature of this problem - that until women are recognised for the value of their caring roles, until women are paid equally for the work they do, until women have social equality and equality of political representation, this will be a never-ending problem.
My other criticism is that I do not see any acknowledgement in this book of women who are anything other than wealthy and white, which made it difficult to relate to. If you have unlimited resources, if you do indeed have choice, then Dr Libby's suggestions are probably gold. But so many women don't have the luxury. But maybe they also don't have the time to read this book...

Thank you.
she has a number of other books - Accidentally overweight & The Invisible Load ... as I have progressed since October & lost 38lb I found this so helpful as not only did it contextualise where I was in the months leading up to October 2020 but also how & why I have been able to lose weight fairly seemlessly since I “stopped” & allowed my nervous system to heal whilst also eating well, moving well & also removing a toxic aggravator ...alcohol.
This book will definitely help you reflect on all you hold dear whilst getting you to question what “drives” you and to more fully understand the damaging impact of rushing from one thing to another.
